FAQ

What is a typical class like?
Class usually starts with students entering the dojo, welcoming the instructors, parents and other students. After changing into their gi (karate uniform) they begin class by standing at attention and giving their instructor a bow. Typically class begins with stretching intermixed with conversation about how things are going, advice on school, etc. Students then proceed to practice punches, blocks, stances and kicks in the air and against targets. This is usually followed by forms. The last activity is usually sparring (simulated one-on-one battles) or games. Class is dismissed with the students standing at attention and giving their instructor a bow.

My child is shy, will karate training help?
Much of what we teach is inner strength and confidence. It won’t happen over night, but karate training helps develop physical as well as mental skills. Students get experience working in a group environment. They get experience speaking and performing in front of a large group. And with physical development comes confidence and experience that helps them inside and outside the dojo.

Can I drop my child off or do I have to stay during class?
It is up to you. Many of our parents stay and watch and are encouraged to do so, but others drop their kids off and pick them up after class.

What is the right age to start training?
Every child is unique so it’s hard to give a blanket answer. Some children starting training as early as 3 while many others start when they are 7, 10 or even as teenagers. Whatever the age of your child, we ensure the appropriate level and type of training.

Should I be worried that my child is learning how to fight?
Children that have martial arts training are much less likely to be bullied or be a bully. We spend as much time teaching young students how to recognize danger and avoid conflict as we do teaching them defensive techniques. We regularly practice how to recognize bullying and how to defuse the situation with humor, confidence, reporting to adults, flight and yes, martial arts as a last resort. And we always reinforce the rules of the dojo in class, in school and at home.

What equipment do we need?
For beginners, the only equipment you need is a gi (pronounced “g-ee” and Japanese for martial arts uniform) and some sparring gear (padded helmet and gloves). We sell all the equipment you need and don’t worry, you can borrow everything you need to try out and see if martial arts training is a fit for your family.

Is karate training dangerous?
Like any sport or physical activity, there is the risk of an occasional scrape or bruise. But in over 40 years of teaching karate to children, rest assured the dojo is one of the safest places your child can be! The most common outcome from karate class is a calm, tired child who will get a good night’s rest!

Is karate training just for boys?
Our students are evenly split between boys and girls.
